We took a high-speed catamaran, SeatJet2, from Santorini to Mykonos. It was windiest day we had in Santorini and when we were leaving, Anthony at the hotel in Santorini said it was going to be windier still in Mykonos. What I failed to deduce from that it would be windy at sea! And windy sea makes for a rough ride, but it was quick, only 2 stomach churning hours.
The famed party island, Mykonos, wasn’t as pretty as Santorini but shopping was much, much better! We had no problem unloading all the Euros we brought from US.
Vencia Boutique Hotel
In the photo below, do you see the blue shutters and a balcony with pergola on second floor? That was our room with a view. Wonderful accommodations and very helpful staff. The three legged house cat Susie was everywhere.
This is my tripadvisor review of the hotel.
It’s a beautiful hotel not in the middle of Mykonos City. At night we were away from noise of the partying crowd in the city and had panoramic view of the city. The walk into the city is less than 10 min. You walk out the back of the hotel onto a street but soon you’ll be out of the traffic and you’ll be in the middle of shopping and restaurants.
Our triple room looked over the pool and the harbor. Our daughter was able to have a lovely little alcove all to herself. Not private but gave her some sense of separation. We had a canopy bed with very comfortable mattress and bathroom was updated and clean. We couldn’t have asked for better accommodations!
What makes this hotel special is the staff. They went out of their way to help us. When we got stuck at the beach because we couldn’t get a taxi and the buses were full and the bus driver not helpful, we called the hotel for SOS. They sent their driver to fetch us at no charge! BTW, the transportation to/from the Port & Airport are included in the room price.
Breakfast buffet in the morning was very nice too. If you decide to stay here, be sure to eat at least one dinner at the hotel’s Karavaki Restaurant. You can sit outside and enjoy the sunset if it’s not too windy and the food is fabulous!
Karavaki Restaurant
We ate here on our first night in Mykonos as it was in the hotel. Although it had panoramic view of the town, the harbor and the sunset. we sat inside because it was too windy.
Starters. Crab salad, summer salad, rocket (arugula) & tomato salad, all fantastic. Cheese pie is fried pastry with cheese stuffed inside and had light taste of honey was good but we’d already stuffed ourselves so we didn’t love it. They also gave us some light cheese pastries with olives on the house which were very tasty.
Main courses. Risotto with mussels, Moussaka (w chunks of meat) w cheese, chicken, and special request linguini w tomato sauce were all excellent. T-bone steak wasn’t so great but that could be because we live in Texas.
Desserts. Orange soufflés with dark chocolate ice cream was heavenly.
Service. Very good. Our server Dimitra was very helpful with food suggestions, charming and efficient
Ornos Beach
We chose to go to the beach on another windy day and apparently this was the most “protected” beach on the island. It was crowded with sunbathers and winds were still pretty strong.
Delos
A tiny island off Mykonos, it’s the birth place of Apollo in Greek mythology. Oldest human settlements on the island was in Neolithic age. Around 3rd millennium BC, it was a tax haven so lots of businesses were based here thus creating a very rich island.
Did I mention the shopping?
